with fire is an ancient Polynesian tradition known
as “Poi." One Grand Junction-based group
called “Burning
Desert Fire Collective” is keeping the spirit
of Poi alive through their artistic fire performances.

under a full moon while twirling fire-ringed hula hoops
and poi, balls on the ends of ropes and chains. It
had the feeling of a sacred religious ritual. The performance

group will perform in the Parade of Lights on Saturday,
December 1st on Main Street. The Burning Desert Fire
Collective will be spinning and twirling fire in
the parade, featuring fire poi, hula-hoops, fire
staves, stiltwalkers, a fire jump rope and more.
