Celebrate darkness and the anticipation of All Hallows Eve at the 10th annual Dark Show, a community art exhibit and costume art party at Planet Earth & the 4 Directions Gallery on Friday, Oct. 26.

Along with the art exhibit opening, there will be performances by Women’s Tribal Fusion, Burning Desert Fire Collective and music by DJ Phoenix.

At 7 p.m., the store’s vintage clothes get pushed aside to make room for a dance floor and the store fills up with costumed people, said Planet Earth employees Lyn Koch and Theresa Hochhalter.

Among the baubles and beads, hats and scarves, trinkets, tea cups and vintage clothing, the gallery is filled with artwork depicting a dark vortex, red smeared paint that looks like blood and psychedelic swirls of color on canvas.

“This exhibit is for artwork that depicts the realm of the unknown, deep spirituality, sexuality, waters and emotions that run deep,” wrote Planet Earth owner Caole Lowry in a news release.

In the art show, there’s a large painting of a cocoon stuck in a spider’s web. Artist and teacher Carol Crockett called her piece “Wedding feast.”

Also in the art show is the torso and head of a male mannequin painted like a skeleton with intestines full of pills and cupcakes, and there is a photograph of a bride kneeling next to a gravestone.

The Dark Show “celebrates the darker side of things,” said Ryan Stringfellow, a performer with Burning Desert Fire Collective.

He has been attending The Dark Show for several years, and this is the fire troupe’s second year to perform.

The fire troupe plans to wear black-and-white costumes to match the “without dark there is no light” theme while they spin and twirl flaming poi, hula hoops, wear crowns of fire, walk on stilts and more.

“Fire performance in itself is such a passionate expression of movement and art and excitement,” Stringfellow said.

The fire troupe also is set to perform at the Grand Junction Rotary Club’s Masquerade on Saturday, Oct. 27, www.masqueradegj.com.

"Having the Burning Desert Fire Collective perform was one of the best choices I could have made. They were professional, easy to work with, and sensitive to the needs of our event. The best part was what a hit they were with our audience. People stood for over a half hour in frigid temperatures, totally captivated and entertained. We will definitely have them again!" – John Anglim, Radio Room Manager, KAFM Community Radio
